Hand Care - Nails Care

Hand Care
For many people especially housewives and manual workers, the hands are the most overworked and ill-used part of the body. They are exposed to all kinds of wear and tear: to the effects of temperature and climate: to frequent wetting: to the onslaughts of harsh chemicals: and to the risk of minor injury and subsequent infection. Yet the care of the hands is often completely overlooked until, say, the skin becomes rough and cracked or a nail is broken.

Chapped hands
The repeated use of soap and water damages the top layer of the skin, and can cause excessive scaling, or chapping. When washing hands lukewarm water and the simplest soap should be used. Exposing unprotected hands to bleaches and other kitchen chemicals, and also to shampoos, can aggravate chapping. To protect hands, wear plastic gloves. Cold weather can also cause chapping of the hands. The skin becomes sore and red and may begin to crack. One has to use cold cream at this time.

Eczema
In some extreme instances, chapping can lead to eczema, or inflammation of the skin. Eczema can also affect people who are allergic to certain materials. As the hands are almost always in contact with some material, the condition can persist. One has to see the doctor in this condition.

Warts
Children in particular are affected by warts, which develop on the hands or fingers and are contagious. Most warts disappear spontaneously, as immunity develops, though they persist for a year or more. There is no way of preventing them. If they cause concern they should be seen by a doctor, who can destroy them with corrosive or freezing fluids.

Nails and their problems

The main function of the finger nails is to protect the sensitive tips of the fingers and concentrate the sense of touch. On average, a nail grows from its base to its top edge in about six months. If nails are not cut they will become split and broken.

Flaking nails
The top layers of nails can separate and start to flake off if they are exposed to too much soap and water or detergent. If flaking occurs, wear plastic gloves when washing dishes or clothes, and massage nail cream into the nail base each day.

Brittle nails
When nails easily crack or break they can be a permanent worry. Weak nails are caused by general ill health or a protein deficiency in the diet. You can increase your nutritional intake by eating more lean meat, fish, fresh fruit and vegetables.

Brittle nails could also be suffering from extreme dryness and, if this is the case, rub in a nail cream every morning and night and keep the nails fairly short until the condition improves.

Loose nails
The excessive use of nail hardeners containing formaldehyde can cause the nail plate to separate from the nail bed. The space beneath the nail may then become infected, causing discoloration. Loose nails can also accompany diseases such as eczema and psoriasis.

Hang nails
If the nails are frequently immersed in water the outer skin layer may split away from the cuticle. The splits, or hang nails, are painful and can become infected. They can be snipped off with sharp nail scissors. To prevent them occurring the skin should be kept flexible by nightly applications of cold creams

Black nails
A heavy blow on the nail---or jamming it in a door---can cause bleeding under the nail which eventually fall off. New growth will cure the condition. If the injury is very painful the nail may have to be removed surgically.

Nail Biting
In both adults and children, nail biting is a common habit, sometimes stemming from insecurity, boredom, anxiety or excitement. Excessive nail biting results in very weak nails and in extreme cases, damaged fingers caused by chewing the nail down to the quick---the sensitive skin beneath the nail. The best remedy is often to appeal to the individual's vanity. Failing this, the person concerned must use willpower to conquer the habit.

Nail Polish Selection....

For the perfect looking nails, you need to take proper care of them. Dirty nails are quite repulsive and clean nails that have been shaped and filed beautifully and polished expertly can make your hands one of your best features. Nail polish comes in thousands of shimmering rich colors and are these days available in quick drying formulas that stay longer to make your nails look stylish always. It is very important that you let each layer of nail paint dry, before applying another coat on it. To quicken the process, you can use the branded quick drying formulas, readily available in the supermarkets. It always handy to keep a cotton bud by your side to remove excess nail varnish on the top of the bottle, as it will prevent of it being glued shut by the drying of the color. You can easily get a coordinated look while doing makeup by visiting a cosmetic saloon and trying out nail polishes that compliment your lip color.

Some beauty product companies, even offer makeup kits that have eye shadows, mascaras, lip liners, lipsticks, blushes and nail polishes that harmonize with each other well for making your makeup choices much more easier. There are quick drying formulas and strong longer lasting formulas to choose from. Speed-dry nail polishes dry quickly of course, but on the other side, they chip easily too. They should be used only in emergencies and should not be included in your daily makeup kit. Strong and longer lasting nail polishes are chip-resistant and do not need frequent touch-ups and are thus pretty good for daily purposes. If you are in a hurry and need a quick manicure for our nails, opt for light or sheer shades. Always store your nail polish in a refrigerator though a cool dry place is still a better option.

Solid color manicure is the most basic and simplest of all. Basic neutrals and mild nail colors are best for first meetings and job interviews. If you are wearing open-toed sandals, you can also apply the same shade on your toenails for the stylish look. Match your nail polish with your outfit. For an easy pick, try choosing the shade that is the second most common in your clothes to emphasize it. Since black and silver lend a bold look so use it only while dating, going to the parties or when you are going on outgoing with your family and friends. Become a craze in your school or college by doing you nails in school colors. You can try painting one nail in one color entirely and then use another color to paint the next nail and so on or paint the body of the nail with one color and tips with another.

Diabetic Nail Care

People with diabetes often have altered sensation in their feet and therefore if they have cracked nails as well it will lead to decreased ability to feel pain, heat or cold. This can result in injury and a delay in getting care for an injury. An injury can lead to a foot ulcer that can become infected. It often takes a long time for an ulcer to heal. Among diabetics changes often take place in the walls of blood vessels. This change leads to the thickening of the walls that makes the blood vessels stiff. This may lead to decreased circulation in the lower legs and feet. This is important because it reduces the body's ability to heal an injury or fight an infection. Complications of foot injuries can lead to amputation.

It is important to control your blood sugar and blood pressure to maintain your health and prevent complications. Also, the key to maintaining healthy feet is to prevent injury by following a plan to check and care for your feet. The following are some measures to assist you in preventing foot problems.

Daily Foot Care Guide:
  • Wash your feet every day using mild soap and warm water. Check the water temperature with your hand or elbow before placing your feet in the water.
  • Dry your feet well. Make sure to dry in between the toes.
  • Look at your feet. Check for any cracks, dry skin, cuts, redness, swelling, and change in temperature.
  • Apply lotion to dry or cracked skin and to the soles of your feet. Do not put lotion between toes.
  • If there are any signs of infection such as swelling, redness, drainage, fever, or chills consult your doctor immediately.
  • Keep toenails neatly trimmed. Cut the nails according to the shape of your toes so they are even with the skin on the end of your toes. Avoid cutting down into the corners. Never cut skin at the end of your toes. Make sure you trim your toenails in proper light. Trim toenails only after soaking feet, for example, after a bath or shower. If your toenails are thickened, you may have to have them trimmed by a doctor.
  • Report signs of ingrown toenails: redness, drainage, and swelling.
  • If you have trouble with your eyesight then have someone help you trim your toenails.
  • Do not try to cut off corns or calluses. If you have corns or calluses, inform your doctor during your next visit. Wearing soft socks and well-fitted shoes can prevent corns or calluses.
Suggestions To Prevent Injury
  • Avoid extreme temperatures. Do not let feet remain wet. Protect your feet from sunlight by using a sunscreen.
  • Do not apply heating pad or hot water bottle to feet. Do not cross legs. Avoid smoking as it constricts blood vessels hence reducing blood circulation to your legs and feet.
  • Every time you visit your doctor ask him to check your feet.
  • If you have a problem with your feed consult your doctor immediately.
  • If the level of your blood sugar has increased then consult your doctor immediately and this could be a sign of infection.

Manicured Hands

Our hands do a lot for us and need nurturing in return. A manicure can improve nail and skin condition. In a professional manicure nails are gently shaped then the nail plate cleaned with either non-drying polish removers or special soaks. Art of manicure began 5000 years ago. In India, henna was used for manicure. The term Mehandi, used synonymously for henna, derives from the Sanskrit mehandika. The word "manicure" comes from the Latin manus, meaning, "hand," and cura meaning, "care".

French Manicure
  • Before beginning you should prepare your hands and nails. Clean your hands with some body scrub. Rinse your hand well and dry thoroughly.
  • Then file your nails neatly. While filing move the file in one direction only from the outer corner to the center. Changing the file direction often can damage the nail plate. Use a file that has a fine surface and smoothly glides over the nail.
  • Apply a layer of sweet almond oil to nourish and soften your nails. Wrap a warm towel and leave for about15 minutes. Unwrap and then push your cuticles back using a rubber hoof stick. Rinse hands in warm water to remove oil and dry thoroughly.
  • Apply a coat of base over your nail to strengthen the nail. This leaves a smooth surface to apply nail polish.
  • If you want your nails to look square, paint a straight line across the tip, along the tip of the nail for a rounded appearance. If you want your nails to look pointed, paint from the sides towards the center. While painting your nails place your hand on a flat surface. Keep the ball of the hand you are painting steady by placing in on the same surface. Allow the polish to dry.
  • As a final coat apply a coat of translucent shell-pink polish over the nail to seal the whitened tip and this will complete the look. If you want extra shine and protection apply a clear, glossy topcoat.
A manicure is a beauty treatment for your fingernails and hands. Apart from cleaning, nourishing, softening your hands, a manicure will also include filing and shaping the nails and applying nail polish. A manicurist can also apply jewels on nails, paint pictures or designs on them. You should visit a manicurist who is licensed as he is dealing with the skin of your hand. There is a risk of infection if the tools are not properly cleaned and sanitized as the same tools are used on a number of people.

Nail-Friendly Footwear

Proper footwear can help keep your feet healthy. Here are tips on choosing shoes to help you put your best foot forward:

  • To keep your feet healthy you will need to own several pairs of shoes. Women who like wearing high heels must have shoes with heels of varying heights. This will help to counteract the effects of raised heels. Heels should never be more than three-quarters of an inch.
  • If you have nail fungus consult your doctor and throw away old sports shoes.
  • Before buying a shoe draw the outline of your foot on a piece of paper. You will get an idea of the actual size of the shoe you should buy.
  • Shoes should be comfortable to wear and wide enough for air circulation. When you buy closed shoes ensure that there is enough space between your longest toe and your toe box. The width of the space should be as much as the width of your thumb.
  • Keeping your feed bare increases the chances of your feet getting injured. So remember to wear shoes whenever you go out. It is best to keep your shoes on even inside your house.
  • Choose shoes according to the activity to be performed. For example, tennis shoes and running shoes look alike but tennis shoes are manufactured in such a way that they provide support for sudden stops and turns.
  • Buy shoes in the latter half of the day and you will get shoes that fir you accurately. By this time your feet are slightly swollen and hence you will get the right fit. When you buy shoes try them on while standing, try on both of them and walk around a little to find out whether it fits you well. Take your socks along to make sure that your shoe fit you comfortably with the socks on.

Weak Nail Tips

Weak fingernails are defined as nails with a faulty structure. Brittle nails can be caused by environmental factors, by a lack of nutrition or from an underlying medical condition. Psoriasis, Raynaud's disease and certain lung conditions can contribute to brittle nails. You can fix weak nails in just a few steps.

Instructions
Take a biotin supplement each day. Biotin deficiency results in weak nails.

Massage a nail strengthening oil or cream into the nails and cuticles. Use a solution that contains protein. Remove any excess oil from the nail and cuticles with a damp towel. Massaging the area stimulates blood circulation in the nails and encourages growth. This should be done a few times each week.

Apply a clear nail polish designed to strengthen nails. Use a product advertised as preventing splitting, nail cracking and chipping.

Remove nail polish (colored or clear) with a remover that does not contain acetone. Acetone dries out nails and makes them more brittle.

Keep hangnails clipped to prevent brittle nails. Also refrain from biting or picking at nails. Biting and picking at nails causes tears, breaks and prevents nails from growing strong.

Wear rubber gloves when cleaning. Harsh chemicals dry out the nails and make nails more brittle and more likely to break. The chemicals are also detrimental to cuticles.
